Sunil Gupta MBE (b. 1953) is an Indian-born, Canadian-artist who uses photography to explore themes of sexual identity, migration, race, and the imagined constitution of the family. Born in New Delhi, for over five decades, Gupta has developed pioneering approaches to lens-based media and image culture.
In this #StudioVisit special, co-hosts Levin Haegele and Omar Kholeif enter the home and studio of Gupta that he shares with his creative collaborator and companion, Charan Singh in South London. At the breakfast table, pulling open archival boxes, gazing at contact sheets, the duo delve into the mysteries of what works of art are exposed to the light, exploring the push and pull of history, memory and desire.
Sunil Gupta is one of the most significant artists working today. His art is held in the collections of Tate, UK; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; the Arts Council Collection, UK; the Government Art Collection, UK; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; The George Eastman Museum, Rochester; the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, and the Sharjah Art Foundation, UAE, among others. In 1988, Gupta was one of the co-founders, of Autograph ABP: Association of Black Photographers in London. Beginning in 2020, Mark Sealy curated From Here to Eternity, a major retrospective that was held at The Photographers' Gallery, London and The Image Centre, Toronto. In 2026, Andrew Nairne will curate a significant exhibition survey, Life with a Camera (1970-Now) at Kettle's Yard, University of Cambridge. He is represented by Hales Gallery, London and New York, among others.
