Studio Visit: Charan Singh

Charan Singh is an award-winning artist and researcher who uses lens based media to explore the performative aesthetics of portraiture and self-portraiture. In particular, they are concerned with "the promise of beauty" looked at from outside of the Euro-American lens of visual culture. Informed by nearly two decades working in not-for-profit (NGO-type) organizations in India, their art seeks to represent and story the lives of individuals whose narratives often remain unseen.

In this episode of #StudioVisit, Omar Kholeif and Levin Haegele, with Sunil Gupta who always has the kettle on the boil, find themselves venturing down lanes of memory with Singh, as they explore the role of the archive in contemporary art, and unfold the artist's experience as he navigates his 'Pre-English life' with their current one.

Charan Singh's first major UK institutional solo exhibition will take place at Autograph ABP this autumn curated by Bindi Vora.
